OUSD is currently making budget cuts and it’s hurting teachers, schools and students alike. The budget cuts are causing many teachers to get laid off and it’s making teachers worried. OUSD has a very large debt of $100M due to a loan from the state of California, that they have yet to pay all back.
These budget cuts will hurt schools from high school to elementary, It might also hurt Montera. The school board voted 6-1 to send out pink slips and the superintendent will be able to eliminate 800 position across the district and there will be a loss of about 100 full time positions.
The district will be required to issue preliminary pink-slips by March 15, 2025 and during the middle of May the district will send out a round confirming if the initial layoffs notices are still available. After that the district will be able to rescind them at any time.
Mrs. Quiter said that she is worried because she is a new teacher and is also worried about who those 800 people will be fired. Schools might get closed and we don’t know who will get laid off,
How will this affect students? Many people have teachers that they love to have classes with and make doing work and studying fun. What will happen if they get cut?
For now, we don’t know if schools will shut down and we don’t know who will get laid off. It will be a very sad for people who have worked hard to get their positions as teachers just to get laid off suddenly. I think that the only thing we can do is protest, just like we did to get schools to not be shut down. If we lose teachers then will not have enough for everyone and classrooms will get overcrowded and the remaining teachers will not be able to control classrooms.
