The Montera school gym is finally completed and ready for use after 1 month of construction. A team of workers painted the walls, re-did the floors, and added new Montera logos all over the gym.
The 6th-grade P.E. teacher, Ms. Ligons, said: “I feel like the gym looks great. I’m happy there are people (businesses) like Under Armor, that are putting money into our school. The new gym floor looks really good, it’s a quality product that is used in most state-of-the-art gyms. There are still some things that need to be fixed because of some mistakes made with the new floor, but I really like that there are new scoreboards and a fresh new coat of paint.”
We asked the 7th and 8th grade P.E and Health teachers their opinions on the new gym as well, “I really like the new gym floor,” Mr. Lenoch said. “I like all the new updates throughout the gym too, like the new logo in the middle of the floor and the new paint on the walls,” Mr. Ford said.
We asked the P.E. teachers if they would change anything about the new gym. “No, to be honest I like the hardwood floors, I think it looks really good,” Ford said.
After all the construction was completed, we realized there was a small mistake made along the way. During the construction process, in order to fully re-do all the gym floor, the workers were supposed to remove the bleachers and replace the floor underneath, but the workers never took the bleachers out. Instead, they built on-top of the old floor, making the bleachers stuck to the ground, and the floor panels chunky and uneven on one side of the gym.
There has been a divider along the middle of the gym that had split the room in half, but since the floor got messed up, the divider cannot be pulled out either, along with the bleachers.
With all these new issues with the uneven ground, it can be very dangerous for the sports practicing and playing in the gym. For the basketball teams, the floor can easily move, especially when kids are constantly running up and down the court dripping the ball. Due to the uneven flooring, there are a lot of new “dead spots”, which means that there are certain spots on the ground that if you dribble the ball on that spot, the ball will not pick-up and begin to roll. This is clearly not very helpful, and can be a major downside for the basketball teams.
Due the malfunctioning divider, we now only have 1 court instead of 2 for the volleyball teams. Anyone who wats to set up the new court will have to fully take out the floor, just to put the polls back into the ground, and then add the. net. This also could be very unsafe for all volleyball teams, and requires a lot of work from the students.
