The 24-25 school year train is nearing its next stop with just one more marking period to go. 8th graders are starting to think about what high school they’re going to or have maybe already thought of where they want to go at the next stop. Friend groups will be separated and new ones will be made, but where? From basketball players to aspiring artists, reporters Rory Hackett and Hayden Chin ask 8th grade students at Montera Middle School what high school they’re going to attend for the 25-26 school year. Here’s the response:
The three most popular high schools amongst Montera’s 8th graders are Bishop O’Dowd High School, Skyline High School, and Oakland Technical High School. The majority of students interviewed are soccer and/or volleyball players or are interested in other things besides sports like visual art or performing arts.
For our athletes’ cars, Oakland Tech and O’Dowd are very popular. These high schools paired with Montera’s athletes are like beabadoobee because they are the perfect pair. Most of our volleyball and basketball players are planning on attending either or for their sports teams.
In the cars next door, Skyline and OSA are popular with artists and/or people that enjoy the simpler things in life. 8th graders planning on attending Skyline likely didn’t choose to because of their parents, siblings, or live nearby.
There are even students moving outside of the Bay area. Although very few in number, the students that are moving outside of the bay are moving because of their family’s decisions.
Another popular reason for attending schools like O’Dowd, Tech, Skyline, Head Royce, and EBIA is because of their inside connections, whether it would be siblings, friends or even staff members that go or have gone there.
Although these decisions aren’t final, this is how our 8th grade students envision their future in high school and what they have planned for themselves.
