Several Montera JV winter sports teams almost disbanded because of a lack of coaches. All teams now have coaches, but not before the athletes were negatively impacted.
“One team missed two games,” said Martin Price, Spanish teacher and Athletic Director. “If they forfeited another game, they would have been out of the league… 20 kids would have missed playing JV basketball.”
According to Price, Montera didn’t cut anyone trying out for sports teams this year. While this means more students get to play, it also means we need more coaches.
“The district only provides coaches for the first [Varsity 1] team,” said Price. “We had to find our own people for, like, four teams.”
There isn’t much incentive for parents to coach. Price said that while the coaches get paid, “it barely covers gas.”
“It’s basically the love for your kids, love for the students, and just love for the game,” said Price. “You will enjoy coaching your kids, and you’ll have that even when kids go off to college… When they finally mature, they’ll realize that they had a parent that spent time with them.”
