The pride festival held on Oct. 25, at Montera Middle School is and annual pride celebration of the queer community at Montera. The event was orchestrated by Mx. Jawdat, history and leadership teacher, who has been doing the event for three years now.
“About 140 students came,” said Mx. J in our interview.
To prepare for this large turnout, Mx. J recruited members of the QSA club at Montera, as well as the SYL class to help with setting up. During 5th period, Mx. J recruited QSA members, and throughout the day got more help.
“Since we had lots of helpers, it really wasn’t that hard to set up,.” Mx. J said about the preparations. There were 2 balloon arches to be made, about 10 tables to decorate, and swag to be put out on tables, but by the time the event was about to start, the event was ready.
“The reason for this event is to bring Montera’s queer community together,.” Mx Jawdat said.
Montera has a strong queer community, and this event was made to uplift it. There has been some cases of homophobia around campus, making this event even more important to spread love.
The event went till the end of the day, and had face painting, bracelet making, merch, pins, and a skittle raffle won by Sydney Lee. Overall, the event was a success.
